Candles By Victoria Story Writing Contest 3rd Runner up

A Fairy Tale Retelling:

Once upon a time, there was a poor woodcutter who spent his days chopping down MAHOGANY and SANDALWOOD trees and selling the wood to feed his family. One evening, he came home to his two children, Victor and Victoria, to find that there was only one FLAP JACK left for the family and not enough CINNAMON DONUTS to go around. Fearing starvation of the whole family, his wife persuaded the woodcutter to lead Victor and Victoria into the woods. The children, having a load of FRESH BAKED BREAD, were clever enough to leave a trail of crumbs behind to lead them home again. However, they did not imagine the BIRDS OF PARADISE would consume their path home. Lost in the grove of towering CEDAR trees, the children were aware of a sudden STORM WATCH that brought high winds and cold RAIN to the forest. The SUMMER SHOWERS grew harsher as the temperature fell, bringing a WINTER SNOWFLAKE here and there.

Wandering, they suddenly noticed the scent of FRESH SQUEEZED ORANGES, and followed the smell to a quaint cottage, made entirely of BUTTERY GINGERBREAD. Starving, the children scarcely noticed what a DIVINE PARADISE this place was, and Victor and Victoria quickly began consuming the cottage, beginning with the HOME SWEET HOME sign made of REESE PEANUT BUTTER. Victor ate SUGAR DROPS off the siding, and an OATMEAL RAISIN COOKIE off of the door, scarcely noticing that it was the doorknob. Victoria had made her way to the COTTAGE GARDEN, where she feasted on LEMONGRASS, a DAFFODIL patch, and a lonely LILAC tree. An old woman appears to them, and invites them into her home. Inside, they are amazed at the food; it reminds them of a CHRISTMAS KITCHEN, full of BLUEBERRY COBBLER, LEMON POUND CAKE, and a JELLY DONUT or two for Victor. For desert, they ate CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRIES, and the children were HAPPY.

Victoria woke up the next morning to find Victor in a cage. Victoria was made a servant; fetch the SUGAR DROPS, go get the APPLES & ORANGES. No RELAXATION at all! Victoria was soon kept busy constantly fetching food to fatten up Victor in the cage: ORANGE CREAM SODA and a PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE here and there. Fattening Victor became an OBSESSION for the old woman. In the mornings, she would squeeze his finger to check how plump he was getting. Victor was quick-thinking and stuck a bone through the cage bars, so the old woman could not tell how fat he was. One morning, the old woman awakens and says she will eat Victor, be he fat or lean. The taste of such a child was VERY IRRESISTIBLE. This thought does not SOOTHE Victoria, and she is made to climb into the oven to see if it is ready to bake Victor. But equally as quick-witted as her brother, Victoria tricks the old woman into climbing into the oven herself (this will always be VICTORIA'S SECRET), and the two children escape into a field of LAVENDER. Stumbling through the same PINEY FOREST they became lost in, they come across a path, alight with beautiful candles. There are red ones and blue ones and purple ones, BISCOTTI ones and BAYBERRY ones and CHOCOLATE MINT ones. The children follow the trail of candles, beautiful in the darkness of the ENGLISH IVY-covered trees that whispered voices in the JUNIPER BREEZE. The trail led straight to the door of their home, their father standing there waiting with open arms to greet them upon their return, a huge sense of STESS RELIEF. In their father's arms, Victor and Victoria felt an overwhelming sense of TRANQUILITY and could not have been happier to UNWIND at home.
